Up close with Avril
Take one look at Avril Lavigne and you’ll see that this punk-rock singer has changed. Well, her appearance, at least.
At a recent press conference in Langham Place, Hong Kong, Lavigne wore a grey hoodie with pink prints (with matching pink nail polish!), fitting three-quarter pants and three-inch pumps. Quite a contrast to the tank tops and skater-boy shorts she used to wear.
“When I was 17, I was pretty tomboyish. Growing up, you become more feminine. I feel like I am still the same person but older,” she revealed to Galaxie magazine in an interview when asked about the new look.
But while her fashion sense has evolved, Lavigne is pretty much the same sulky and arrogant pop star who burst onto the music scene six years ago with the massive hit, Complicated.
Throughout the 30-minute interview, Lavigne appeared restless, shifting in her seat constantly.
And when someone dared bring up her husband of 11 months Deryck Whibley, the front man of Sum 41, Lavigne just rolled her eyes and responded curtly. Even when asked about her music, Lavigne was terse.
“I am the first one, I don’t have to compete with anyone!” was her reply when asked how she is going to compete with female artistes like Kelly Clarkson and Ashlee Simpson, who have jumped on the pop-rock bandwagon.
Still, it is this attitude that propelled her to the top of the pop rock game in the first place. Lavigne is non-apologetic and feisty and she knows it.
“I just live life the way I do. It is either you like me or you don’t.”
Clearly, many do. Girlfriend, the radio-friendly first single from her third album, The Best Damn Thing, hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. And in a poll in galaxieblog.com.my, Lavigne was picked as the female artiste Malaysians would most like to see in concert (beating Beyonce and Gwen Stefani).
Unlike Lavigne who doesn’t believe in modesty, new American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, is nothing but humble. In Galaxie’s exclusive interview with the 17-year-old, Sparks revealed that although she wanted to win the title when she joined the competition, it’s the experience she cherishes most.
“If I didn’t (win), it was not going to be the end of the world for me. I would still be happy because I think it is really cool I got a chance to be a part of it,” Sparks said.
Galaxie also spoke with The Fray’s Joe King, who was quick to dismiss the myth that The Fray is a Christian rock band.
“We never intended to be a Christian rock band... Church music was an influence but it was not a mould for us,” said the band’s guitarist and vocalist.
Instead, it was the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam that made him want to be in a band.
